Kungwe Beach Lodge, Mbali Mbali Lodges and CampsLike its northerly neighbour Gombe Stream, Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa . Around 1000 of these fascinating animals roam the isolated rain forest, set within a chain of dramatic peaks, draped in lush vegetation that falls to the beaches of lake Tanganyika far below.
Leopard, warthog, giant squirrel and at least nine species of primate including troops of red colobus, red tailed and blue monkeys are just some of the larger mammals to be found here. The abundant bird life is matched by the extraordinary number of fish species found in the lake.
In addition to hiking the trails in search of chimpanzees, visitors can trace the local 'Tongwe' people's enclaves of rain forest to grassy ridges chequered with alpine bamboo. After a hot walk in the forest, the clear waters of the lake beckon for an inviting dip!
